At a national level, family is a vital, irreplaceable social infrastructure for optimising human welfare and development. In even the poorest communities, the family network is the best safety net, where individuals who find themselves in trouble can turn to and depend on. It is a natural building block on which help can be best anchored in reaching out to the poor and vulnerable among us.
ENCOUNTER GOD’S DESIGN FOR LIFE IN COMMUNITY
In societies where individual rights precede the interests of common good, communities can unthinkingly champion well-meaning causes that undermine the structure of family for everyone. There are obvious macro-economic effects when families fail to form or disintegrate en masse. These show up in the national economy as a decline in the availability of family capital, as a rising generation is deprived of a historically important start-up support and resource. The alternative is to lay hold of a pragmatic vision of social good where every child is given the best chance to be raised in an intact, complete family. While no family is perfect, the model of the natural family is a ready-made, biologically and socially integrated design, proven over millennia to be successful and efficient in growing, nurturing, and mentoring children to their fullest potential. It is here that children first learn to interact and love one other in preparation for life in the community. And it is here that we create the conditions for an enduring legacy of social good.
“Praise the Lord.
Blessed are those who fear the Lord,
who find great delight in his commands.
Their children will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in their houses,
and their righteousness endures forever.
Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.
Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,
who conduct their affairs with justice.
Surely the righteous will never be shaken;
they will be remembered forever.
They will have no fear of bad news;
their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;
in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.
They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,
their righteousness endures forever;
their horn will be lifted high in honor.”
